GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Dean Vander Plas has stepped down as boys basketball at Ripon after 21 seasons.

Vander Plas led Ripon to its first state tournament since 2003 (fifth overall) this past season, where it lost to Xavier in a battle of undefeated teams in a Division 3 state semifinal.

"My reason is that my season of life is changing," Vander Plas said. "My youngest is graduating (high school), my middle is getting close to being done at the UW, my oldest is getting married and I am moving to Madison (where he has worked the last six-plus years). It's time for the next step in my life.

"I've loved coaching and will miss the players dearly. I am excited about the next step."

Vander Plas' youngest child is Bennett, who starred on the basketball team the last four seasons. He will play collegiately at Ohio University starting next season.
