Talented Bay Port looking forward to the season

SUAMICO (WLUK) -- Bay Port enters this season optimistic based on the talent it is returning and it is a lot of talent.

The Pirates, winners of 27 straight Fox River Classic Conference games, return the FOX 11 and FRCC defensive player of the year in lineman Max Meeuwsen (Navy) and offensive lineman Braden Doyle (Central Michigan), who have committed to Division I universities. Furthermore, running back Isaiah Gash (1,646 yards, 30 TDs last season) returns as does quarterback Andrew Thomas and sophomore linebacker Jayden Montgomery, among others.

"I feel like this year is going to be our best year for years to come just because of the talent that we do have," senior Ben Storby said, "and the athletes that we do have, so I think we need to push ourselves more than ever just to get to the final round of the playoffs."

"It's a good group of kids, they've worked really hard this offseason and through the summer, so obviously we're excited; we're excited very year, but this senior class is special," coach Gary Westerman said. "And we're big up front, our skill position is good and they've worked really hard, High character kids, so that's really important to me and we're just excited about the season."

The last time Bay Port played a football game it fell to Kimberly in a Level 3 playoff game at home. After winning its first 11 games, it was a tough result to swallow and while it's a new season the Pirates have not forgotten that feeling."

"I think everyone looks at it as motivation," senior lineman Jacob Nugent said."I think we let a lot of people down, including ourselves, mostly, last year. I think if we can get them again this year it would be amazing for us to redeem ourselves.

"That was our first game we had a lot of adversity and I think that adversity from last year we can use that to fuel us this year."

"We were with them until half and then momentum changed just like that and we just got behind," Storby said. "I think that proves we need to handle adversity better this year so if we do get down, we have to learn to get back up and punch back."

Being a year wiser the Pirates just might be able to do that.
