ASHWAUBENON (WLUK) -- Next week the high school football season kicks off and Friday teams around the state held scrimmages in preparation.

Since high school football doesn't have a preseason like the NFL, scrimmages are the best test for teams prior to the regular season.

Two teams who met Friday were Appleton North and Ashwaubenon, two teams looking to contend in their respective conferences.

The coaches involved love what the scrimmage tells them.

"You never know who's going to hit, who isn't going to hit?" Ashwaubenon coach Mark Jonas said. "Who's going to shy away, who isn't.?

"There's a lot of value in scrimmages," Appleton North coach Rob Salm said. "For one thing, there's kids that may have really improved in the offseason, physically, but they haven't seen live bullets yet.

"This is as close to live bullets you're going to get to a regular season game. They need these experiences."

Some scrimmages involve as many as four teams, but Jonas prefers a one-on-one matchup, especially against a team that looks like ones his team will face during the regular season

"Appleton North just has a great program, they always have," Jonas said. "The size of their kids replicates a lot of the teams in our conference so it helps out a lot in that respect also."

No major injuries happened between North and Ashwaubenon, so now it's time to prepare for the season opener. Ashwaubenon hosts Green Bay Preble on Thursday and North plays at D.C. Everest next Friday.

"I feel very good," Jonas said. "It was all positives today. The number one goal anytime you're scrimmaging is keep everybody healthy.

"You don't have to go any further than watching Green Bay's game last night or listen to UW's practice and have Jack Cichy out to know that everybody is one person away from having a bad injury and affecting their team. I'm excited. I can't wait for next Thursday night."
