PULASKI (WLUK) -- The Pulaski boys basketball team won 20 games last season and despite losing key players to graduation the Red Raiders are winning again this season.
With a new-look roster Pulaski is undefeated and has its eyes on a Fox River Classic Conference title.
"We lost a lot of seniors and we lost a lot of major guys last year, but coming into practice I think we knew we had a special group of young guys and I think we can build on that," Pulaski senior Pierce Narges said.
Pulaski had to replace Jacob DeStarkey (15.8 points per game) and Wade Geenen (15.4 ppg.), who graduated, amongst others. Coach Dave Shaw wasn't sure hgis team would be perfect through nine games, but it is.
"I think it's fair to say we exceeded expectations," Shaw said. "We want to compete every game, we want to play to the best of our abilities and I think we've overachieved a little bit here and there, but that happens when you have good kids that believe in what they're doing and have good chemistry so it's not a big surprise, I guess, if you're going to ask that."
Pulaski is the only undefeated team in the Fox River Classic Conference and the biggest reason why, of course, is defense. The defensive-minded Red Raiders are at it again this season, allowing just 45 points per game.
"Team sports, you have to be willing to defend,' Shaw said. "You have to be willing use that as a calling card and that's kind of been a staple here in Pulaski the nine years I've been here."
Pulaski's defense will be tested in upcoming games as it plays De Pere, Bay Port and Sheboygan North. Bay Port and Pulaski are the last two perfect teams in FRCC play.
The players are looking forward to the challenge. They like the idea they can rely on defense in big games.
It's a part of basketball and I love playing defense," junior Dylan Hendricks said. "Actually, I like it better than playing offense."
Added Narges: "Some people don't like it but I think it's fine to get under people's skin and play good defense and frustrate the opponent."
And that's what has happened this season.
