GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Wednesday was the start of the early-signing period and many local athletes put pen to paper to make it official as to where they would continue their athletic careers in college.

Among them was a Freedom twosome, who are going to play women's basketball. Callie Genke signed with Green Bay and Gabby Johnson signed with St. Thomas.

"I'm really excited to be able to play under coach (Kevin) Borseth," Genke said. "It was nice to officially be done with the recruiting process and know it's official.

"It's close to home and the coaches are really great. The culture that they made there, their winning tradition, they have a great style of play that I feel like I will fit into well."

Meanwhile, Johnson is headed for a school that will compete in Division I, starting her freshmen season.

"Beyond excited for this," she said. "I'm super ready to attend St. Thomas to get the basketball program rolling. Overall I'm super-excited to finally to sign my name on there and get it official.

"Just amazing. I had this dream a little kid to go and play DI college basketball and now being able to sign for that and complete that goal, it's amazing."

Also signing with Green Bay for women's basketball is Kimberly's Maddy Schreiber, while Notre Dame's Sammy Opichka, who inked with St. Thomas.
