GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- The boys and girls state volleyball tournament starts Thursday at the Resch Center and locally Kimberly and Appleton North will hit the court.
Kimberly is seeded No. 1 on the boys' side while Appleton North is seeded No. 6 in Division 1 in the girls' bracket.
The Papermakers were runner's-up last year but this season they are looking for more when they open tournament play against No. 8 Kettle Moraine.
"Our goal is to win a state championship," Kimberly senior Landon Krause said. "We've had that on our mind since the beginning of the year, we have the guys to do it and if we work hard the rest of the way we know we can get there."
Meanwhile, North is young but is embracing the opportunity that lies ahead as it opens play Thursday against No. 3 River Falls.
"Our goal is to fight as much as we can," North sophomore Brianna Cantrell said. "We played a couple of the teams (that are at state) a couple of times so we know a little about them, but once we get to state we're just going to play our heart out and see what happens and just be ourselves."
A win Thursday for either team would send it to Friday's state semifinals.
