SUAMICO (WLUK) -- Emma Nagel scored two second-half goals as Bay Port continued its march towards a potential second straight trip to the state tournament with a 4-0 win over Appleton West in a Division 1 sectional semifinal girls soccer game Wednesday.
No. 1-seeded Bay Port (21-1) scored two goals in the first 15 minutes as Grace Krause and Anna Gulan found the back of the net. No. 2 West, however, didn't wilt until Nagel netted her goals late in the second half.
"The 2-0 lead, I always say 2-0 is the toughest lead to have in soccer," Bay Port coach Brooke Mraz said. "You can't become complacent and we knew this was going to be a tough Appleton West team from a very solid conference so we had to come out from the whistle and put the pressure on right away."
Bay Port advances to a sectional final Saturday at Wausau West against the winner of Thursday's game between Eau Claire Memorial and Stevens Point. Last year, Bay Port beat Memorial in the sectional final to make the state tournament.
"I think we're very confident," Nagel said. "We have a lot of senior leadership on the team, which kind of helps the lowerclassmen so I think they really help us and bring us up to their level."
