How they got here: The bowl game, in its second year of existence, ties in the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA, with the Sun Belt being an alternate if one of those two conferences doesn’t have enough bowl-eligible teams. Thus, South Alabama filled the Conference USA slot.
About Air Force: Air Force opened the season 4-0, then lost three in a row and then won five in a row, so the Falcons enter the contest on a five-game winning streak. The Falcons finished one game out of first place in the Mountain West, which had a three-way tie for first. Air Force,,a run-heavy wishbone offense, has four running backs with more than 600 rushing yards: Jacobi Owens leads with 785 yards, while Timothy McVey adds 667 yards and 10 TDs, D.J. Johnson 617 yards and Arion Worthman 603. Quarterback Nate Romine has 1,206 passing yards with 10 TDs and 4 INTs. Jalen Roberts has 33 catches for 835 yards (25.3 yards per catch) for 5 TDs. Air Force has made a bowl in nine of last 10 seasons.
About South Alabama: The Jaguars became bowl eligible after beating New Mexico State in the regular-season finale. South Alabama opened the season with its first-ever win over an SEC school when it beat Mississippi State, 21-20. It also posted another impressive win over then-No. 19 San Diego State, 42-24. South Alabama’s offense is led by quarterback Dallas Davis, who has 2,461 passing yards with 10 TDs and 11 INTs. Meanwhile, Xavier Johnson leads the Jaguars on the ground with 787 yards and 10 TDs. Also, Gerald Everett has 49 catches for 717 yards and four TDs. This is the Jaguars’ second bowl appearance. They lost to Bowling Green, 33-28, in the 2014 Camellia Bowl.
