WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) – A special parade took place on Saturday to lift the spirits of rehabilitation center residents in Waynesville.

Local law enforcement, fire and EMS staff led the way in greeting about 70 residents gathered outside of Autumn Care of Waynesville on July 11.

Due to COVID-19 visitor restrictions, residents haven’t been able to see family members and loved ones for about four months.

Staff say the parade was a way to show residents that they are cared about.

“We just wanted an opportunity, in a controlled environment, to have the families of the residents see them and have our residents see their families and know that they’re not forgotten, and they are loved and kind of make a big deal," David Weoodlief of the center said. "And we’re able to do it with masks and some social distancing.”

The parade featured lots of signs, balloons and smiles behind those masks.
