GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (WLUK) -- It's an all-out chicken war on College Avenue!
Two new restaurants are opening in the Appleton area, and both are the first Fox Valley locations for two well-known chains.
People wrapped around the building of Popeyes all day long Tuesday for the grand opening.
Excitement was in the air. That energy is expected to grow as another popular chicken chain, Chick-fil-A, opens just down the road next week.
"Love that chicken from Popeyes," one customer sang as she waited in the drive thru.
People were eager to get their hands on the famous Louisiana chicken.
"We’ve been waiting and anticipating and today's the day," said Tara Williams, who was waiting in line inside.
Fans of the chicken waited for over an hour as employees passed out beads and bracelets for a full Mardi Gras theme.
"You guys are going to enjoy everything that's on the menu," said one employee handing out bracelets.
Popeyes pushing a newer item at the top of the menu.
"We want to brag about our new chicken sandwich. We just released it about 35-40 days ago." said Brian Smith, the location's owner.
The sandwich looks familiar to Chick-fil-A's.
Chick-fil-A tweeted Monday that chicken and pickles on a bun was its invention, setting off a national conversation about whose chicken sandwich is better.
And with a Chick-fil-A opening up just blocks away, that feud is about to hit pretty close to home.
"I literally live two blocks from here so we’ve been watching the construction going on in both places and I've had both places so we can't wait for the Chick-fil-A to open either again it's just something new and something different on this side of town. So we don’t have to travel as far to get what we like," said Tara Williams.
Popeyes expects things to be this busy for maybe the next month, even with that Chick-fil-A opening up next week.
Chick-fil-A's grand opening is Aug. 29.
