GREEN BAY (WCWF) -- Minnesota Nurse Manager Robin Petersen works at Hennepin County Medical Center, one of the many places around the world using face masks per CDC recommendations. Though protective and potentially life-saving, they can be a bother.

Robin says many of the staff mentioned how irritating the straps around their ears are. Wearing them all day long and moving minimally, the elastic straps pull on the back of your ears causing the irritation. So, she took matters into her own hands.

She first got the idea from a fellow nurse in her department, who made a heavier duty style headband, and thought to herself- I can make that. That evening on her way home from work she stopped to pickup some headbands and buttons, and fashioned together a variety of styles for those in her department.

Robin says, "With COVID-19, it's made people very resourceful, and with limited supplies and masks available, people, nurses and others have had to get creative." The supplies for the face mask handy helpers are simple and can be purchased at any Target or Walmart.

Robin says if people ask and need them- she is more than willing to make more. For details on how to create your own homemade face mask and what will work, refer to the Centers for Disease Control website.
