Native American rock art in Door County

Matt Velguth, author of "The Gills Rock Petragraphs: Archives of Stone," appears on CW 14 Focus with Robert Hornacek

(WCWF) -- This week on CW 14 Focus host Robert Hornacek will be joined by local author Matt Velguth.

Velguth is the author of "The Gills Rock Petragraphs: Archives of Stone." The book details a series of Native American paintings near Gills Rock. The paintings are believed to have been made more than 300 years ago.

FOX 11 highlighted the rock art in a special 15 years ago.

On the show, Velguth will talk about the story behind the paintings. He'll also talk about some of the damage at the site.

"Some of that has been due to unintentional vandalism, people try to scrub the paintings to make them brighter or wash lichen off and you end up damaging the work,” Velguth said. "There's erosion going on with that rock face. The bluff is exposed to the north. You have a high-water year like we do now. The water is right in underneath these carving out the rock."

CW 14 Focus is a weekly, half-hour interview program that focuses on the issues important to people in northeast Wisconsin. Each week, Robert Hornacek will sit down with a different guest and go beyond the sound bites. The program will highlight the people making a difference in the community and give viewers an opportunity to get in depth perspective. CW 14 Focus airs Sundays at 10 a.m.
