Emmy Award-Winning Havoline Football Saturdays Kicks Off Eleventh Season This Weekend
This Week Spotlights Florida State Heisman Trophy Winner Charlie Ward, Florida National Championship Quarterback Chris Leak, North Carolina Record-Setting Return Specialist Ryan Switzer and a Road Trip to LSU and Death Valley
Charlotte, N.C. – Raycom Sports’ multi-Emmy Award-winning summer television series, “Havoline Football Saturdays,” begins its eleventh season this weekend. The series, with six one-hour episodes, is hosted by Tim Brando and syndicated in 89 markets throughout the country.
This week’s show will highlight 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward from Florida State. The two-sport athlete led the Seminoles to the 1993 National Championship in football and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball. The son of a football coach, he revolutionized the fast break offense on the football field for legendary coach Bobby Bowden. Surprisingly, Ward did not play in the NFL. He was drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft and ended up playing 11 years of pro ball. We catch up with the Seminole legend back on the field coaching high school football.
Also visit with Chris Leak, who quarterbacked the Florida Gators to the 2006 National Championship. From a talented football family, Leak led Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C. to three straight state titles and was national offensive player of the year as a senior. He went on to earn SEC Freshman of the Year honors and finished his career as the Gators’ career passing leader. Now back in Gainesville, hear from Leak as he begins his first season as the Gators’ wide receivers coach.
Go home to Charleston, W.V. with Ryan Switzer. The North Carolina wide receiver and punt returner had a dream season as a freshman. He earned first-team All-ACC honors after tying an NCAA record with five punt return touchdowns, including one in the Belk Bowl when he was named MVP of the game. Hear from Switzer and his family about how playing with a chip on his shoulder has helped him exceed expectations.
And Road Trip with Tommy Kane to Death Valley for the LSU-Florida game. In addition to sampling great Cajun cuisine and tailgating with Tiger fans, T-K hangs out with Mike the Tiger and talks with Willie Robertson from Duck Dynasty.
